An hour of difference moves your ascendant about 15 degrees, which can change the sign entirely. Without an exact time the result is approximate.
What the rising sign actually is
Your rising sign is not a planet or a star. It is an intersection. The ecliptic — the line the Sun and planets appear to travel along — crosses the horizon at two points. The degree of the zodiac that was climbing the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born is your ascendant.
That is why it does not depend on the date, as your sun sign does, but on two things your sun sign ignores entirely: the local clock time of your birth and the coordinates of the place. Two people born on the same day, in the same city, four hours apart, have different rising signs.
What it takes to work out by hand
Before computers this was done with three books and arithmetic. They still work:
An ephemeris for the year of birth. Raphael’s has been published annually since the nineteenth century; the Swiss Ephemeris is the modern equivalent. You need one figure from it: the sidereal time at Greenwich for 0h on the day you were born.
A table of houses — Raphael’s or Dalton’s are the classics — arranged by latitude. These are what turn local sidereal time into a degree of the ascendant.
An atlas with coordinates and historical time zones. This is the one people skip and the one that ruins the answer: you need the zone actually in force at that place on that date, not the one in force now.
Before the tables there was the astrolabe, whose name means literally “star-taker”. By measuring the altitude of a star above the horizon it let you deduce the time and the degree rising: the same problem, solved in brass.
The procedure, step by step
1. Write down the local clock time exactly as it read, together with the time zone in force at that place on that date, including any summer time.
2. Convert to Universal Time. If the zone is west, add it; if east, subtract it. Watch the date: crossing midnight changes which day you take from the ephemeris.
3. Look up the sidereal time at Greenwich for 0h UT on that date in the ephemeris.
4. Add the elapsed interval, corrected. A sidereal day is 3 min 55.9 s shorter than a solar one, so the sidereal clock gains 9.8565 seconds for every hour of Universal Time. Add the hours elapsed plus that correction.
5. Move from Greenwich to your own place. The Earth turns 360° in 24 hours, which is 4 minutes of time per degree of longitude. Divide your longitude by 15 to get it in hours: add if east, subtract if west. The result is your local sidereal time, which the tables call LST or RAMC.
6. Enter the table of houses at your latitude, find the row nearest your local sidereal time, and read off the degree of the ascendant. Interpolate between rows.
A worked example you can check above
Born 11 May 1976 at 15:20 in Mexico City (19.4° N, 99.15° W). Mexico was not observing summer time in May 1976, so the zone is UTC−6.
Step 2. 15:20 + 6 h = 21:20 UT, same day.
Step 3. Sidereal time at Greenwich for 0h UT on 11 May 1976: 15h 15m 37s.
Step 4. 21.333 hours have elapsed. The correction is 21.333 × 9.8565 s = 210 s = 3m 30s. So 15h 15m 37s + 21h 20m + 3m 30s = 12h 39m 07s, after dropping 24 hours.
Step 5. 99.15° W ÷ 15 = 6h 36m 36s, subtracted because it is west: local sidereal time = 6h 02m 31s, or 90.65° in degrees.
Step 6. In the tables for 19° north, that sidereal time gives an ascendant in Libra, half a degree into the sign.
The calculator above, which uses precision ephemerides rather than rounded tables, returns Libra 0° 35′. The hand calculation is out by some five minutes of arc — less than one minute of error in the birth time would produce. Which is exactly why the time matters so much.
The two mistakes that wreck the calculation
The time zone. This is behind nearly every wrong ascendant. Knowing the country is not enough: you need the zone that applied that day and whether summer time was running. Britain used Double Summer Time during the second world war, putting clocks two hours ahead. The United States left summer time to individual states until 1966. Mexico abolished it in 2022. An hour of error moves the ascendant about 14 degrees — half a sign.
The sign of the longitude. Adding instead of subtracting at step 5 displaces the result by twice your longitude. For the Americas it is always a subtraction; for Europe and Asia, an addition.
It is not two hours per sign
It is repeated everywhere that each sign takes about two hours to rise, because twelve signs in twenty-four hours gives two. The average is true; the individual signs are not. The ecliptic is tilted 23.44° to the equator, so it meets the horizon at very different angles depending on latitude, and some signs climb far faster than others.
Minutes each sign takes to cross the ascendant, computed for three latitudes:

In Moscow, Libra takes three hours to rise and Aries forty-two minutes: you are more than four times likelier to be born with Libra rising than Aries, from latitude alone. Near the equator the difference almost disappears. Tradition calls Cancer through Sagittarius the “signs of long ascension” and Capricorn through Gemini those “of short ascension”, and the figures bear it out.
A check that needs no instruments
If you were born near sunrise, your rising sign roughly matches your sun sign. The reason is immediate: at sunrise the Sun sits on the eastern horizon, which is precisely where the ascendant is measured. Born at midday, the Sun will be near your midheaven and the ascendant falls some three signs earlier; born at sunset, the Sun is near the descendant, so the ascendant is the sign opposite your sun sign.
It is a crude check but a useful one: if a calculator hands you a rising sign that contradicts the time of day you were born, there is a time-zone error somewhere.
Observing the ascendant with the naked eye
In principle you need only look east. In practice you cannot, for one concrete reason: the ecliptic is not drawn on the sky. What you see rising are stars, and the constellations no longer line up with the signs — precession has shifted them nearly a whole sign since the tropical zodiac was fixed.
What you can observe is a reference point: the Moon, or a visible planet, coming up over the eastern horizon. Its position on the ecliptic that day is in any ephemeris, and that degree is the ascendant for that instant. It is what the astrolabe did, with more steps.
Rising sign, Sun and Moon are not the same thing
Your Sun is the underlying purpose, what drives you. Your Moon is what you need in order to be at peace, and how you react when nobody is watching. The rising sign is the door: how you approach what is new, and the first thing other people notice.
All three are different and all three are yours, which is why two people of the same sun sign can resemble each other so little.
The twelve rising signs
Aries Rising
You meet life head on and throw yourself into anything new. You are direct, assertive and straightforward to the point of inconvenience, and you cannot really do guile: what you project is confidence, and sometimes arrogance. Tact is not your first instinct, and you can be oblivious to what someone else needed without meaning any harm at all.
You depend on approval far less than most people. You are self-reliant, you would rather do it your own way, and going it alone does not trouble you; groups often feel like a poor fit, and you end up either leading or standing apart. You think in clear, almost black-and-white terms, and that is precisely what lets you decide quickly.
When an idea inspires you the urgency is immediate, and you charge at it boldly with very little planning. Patience and fine detail are not your strengths, so your history holds brilliant successes and painful failures, and you have always preferred mistakes to playing safe. Passivity in others irritates you, and you follow nobody. You present a strong front and rarely let anyone see the part of you that doubts.
Taurus Rising
You have a sensible, realistic outlook and both feet on the ground. People read you as a rock: solid, dependable, constant — and you are, to an almost startling degree, because your endurance is considerable and you dislike changing a routine that works. You do things deliberately and methodically, and the unexpected costs you.
You give a gentle impression, and underneath it sits an enormous and fairly stubborn will. You move at your own pace and refuse to be hurried. Charm, beauty or affection can coax you; force never will. You will not fight about it either — you simply do not move. Once you have settled on something you are immovable, and in a contest of wills you tend to win by sheer persistence, outlasting whoever started it.
Behind the slowness is a real need for security: a home of your own, money set aside, work that holds. The other side of that is staying in the familiar long after it has stopped being interesting. You take unforced pleasure in the physical world — food, landscape, texture — with a healthy sensuality, and your taste runs classic rather than modern.
Gemini Rising
You are always questioning and learning, and you seem young whatever your age, because your mind will not sit still: alert, curious, flexible, open. Anything new delights you with something close to a child's enthusiasm, and bores you again almost as fast. You keep so many things going at once that you lose track of a few.
You are articulate, quick and genuinely funny; you make good company even on a bad day, because you never come across as heavy. To more solemn people you can look frivolous, and there are serious matters you appear unbothered by. You need variety, stimulation and people around you.
You answer the world with your head before your feelings, and you do not always empathise: carrying someone else's emotional weight is uncomfortable, and anything you cannot reason your way into you would rather set aside — including your own feelings. Consistency is not among your virtues and your life has a lot of movement in it. Your gifts are real, though: language, verbal speed, social ease, and an unusual talent for building bridges between people and between ideas.
Cancer Rising
You come across as gentle, and you stay reserved until you know someone well enough to feel it is safe to open up. You need emotional security and somewhere to belong, and you are deeply attached to the past — your heritage, your family, familiar places. Big changes, moving away from what is known, genuinely hurt. You hold on to people, memories and objects that carry meaning, and having a home that is a refuge matters more to you than to almost anyone.
You approach life emotionally, alert to undercurrents of feeling other people never register. Instinct leads rather than reasoning, and often you cannot explain why: something feels right or it does not. Your loyalties colour your opinions, and the broad principle interests you less than how it lands on the people close to you.
With those you love you are tenacious, protective and nurturing regardless of your gender. You sense what someone feels before they say it, other people's pain moves you easily, and you are the one they come to for comfort. Your moods shift often. And you never forget a kindness, or the absence of one.
Leo Rising
There is pride in how you arrive, and some vanity: you like to be impressive and to be seen as somebody who matters. Nothing about your entrance is timid or self-effacing, and the background does not suit you. You lead naturally and take orders badly. You need something of your own — a project, a business, a home — to run by your own judgement, and you leave a personal mark on everything.
Your sense of dignity is strong. Being treated humiliatingly genuinely offends you, and you will rarely confront the person, because pride will not let you: you simply stop respecting them. What wounds most is being ignored.
When you care about someone your loyalty is enormous and you give without measuring, going to lengths to make them happy — and your gifts are never anonymous, because you expect them acknowledged, just as you expect loyalty returned. Working alongside someone as strong as you is hard, since sharing the leading role is not in your nature. You have courage, and people come to you for encouragement. You always show your best face, and rarely let anyone see how much you need to be loved.
Virgo Rising
You present modestly, often quietly, and a supporting role suits you better than the lead. You assess yourself humbly and chase perfection with a self-criticism that overshoots: however well you do something, you see the flaw and how it might be better. Sometimes you will not start at all, because you already know you cannot meet your own standard.
You have an eye for detail and are unsettled by what is done carelessly — usually something everyone else finds trivial. You are hard to please and your relationships feel it. Your senses are refined and you are particular about food, clothes, company, and order in the space around you.
You enter situations cautiously, weighing the risk before moving, and if it is not a safe bet you probably will not leap. You underestimate what you are capable of, and worrying is a bad habit of yours; in exchange, you rarely fall flat and what you do you do very well. What people notice first is a cool, objective manner: you seem more businesslike and more conservative than you are underneath, and you are the one asked for an unbiased opinion rather than for comfort.
Libra Rising
Diplomacy is your first instrument: reasonable, tolerant, always willing to hear the other version. Even in sharp disagreement you look for the point of overlap before the difference, and you avoid extreme positions. You want relationships to be harmonious and you show it through cooperation and fairness. You also want to be liked, and that need for approval makes you easy to influence, especially when young: you will suppress what you feel rather than cause offence, to the point where your politeness can read as indecision.
The search for balance extends to what can be seen. You appreciate beauty and have a natural sense of proportion; from furniture to clothing, merely functional is never enough.
You treat relationships as an art, and you are skilled at it, because tact comes easily and you read people accurately. Being part of a couple feels natural and raises your confidence; solitude is not your element. The risk is leaning too far and never building an identity outside the bond — finding the balance between being yourself and merging with someone is your real challenge. People see you as agreeable and conciliating, and though there is much more, that is the face you show.
Scorpio Rising
You are strong-willed and proud, but intensely private and not easy to know. Behind the quiet exterior sits emotional depth, complexity and a fierce determination: when you want something you pursue it quietly, insistently and whole, and you usually get it.
You do not live on the surface. You want intensity, and neither conflict nor the darker side of things frightens you; you function well in a crisis and sometimes seek one out, because that is where you feel yourself working at full capacity. Your intuition about people is sharp, particularly about what goes unsaid and the motives underneath — your gut reactions are immediate and usually right, even when you could not say where they came from.
With others you move cautiously, sometimes suspiciously, and trust does not come easily. Once you commit, your loyalty is without reserve and you expect exactly the same back; betrayal by someone you loved can turn into a resentment the same size as the affection. Nothing is done halfway, and you attach yourself jealously to whatever matters. People find you something of an enigma, and find you magnetic.
Sagittarius Rising
High-spirited and enthusiastic, you love adventure and whatever you have not seen yet, and you do not live well shut inside the same small, safe world for long. There is a restlessness underneath and a suspicion that something larger than anything so far exists, so you spend a good deal of time inhabiting your plans. You tend to believe the grass is greener elsewhere, you like having a goal, and the moment you reach it you move to the next. You take risks, you recover from setbacks quickly, and your faith in life is hard to break.
You love freedom and cannot bear a cage; the people who love you have to respect that. Binding commitments weigh on you, and growing up — in the sense of accepting limits — came harder to you than to others.
You say what you believe plainly, you think in large patterns, and now and then enthusiasm carries you and you exaggerate: you promise a great deal and you are convincing. You do everything generously and detest meanness. You see the whole picture, which serves you in politics, business, teaching or religion. People find you good company, not always consistent, and someone who gets them looking forward again.
Capricorn Rising
You move cautiously and keep your own counsel, measuring the situation before acting, and the schemes of anyone too starry-eyed will not carry you — in fact you will look at them sceptically. You grew worldly early, with a little cynicism: the world did not strike you as a particularly safe place, and you approach it guardedly. You rarely improvise.
You are pragmatic and an excellent strategist, planning for maximum effect, working with uncommon persistence and often doing things the hard way. You do not expect to be looked after and sometimes will not even ask. There is ambition, but a quiet kind: nothing flashy. You take your obligations and your standing seriously.
You come across as mature, serious and emotionally contained. Sloppy sentiment makes you uncomfortable and you will not display the softer feelings; you want to look composed and you hate any visible crack. You respect tradition and what can be learned from people further along, and with the years you hand on a hard-earned wisdom of your own. You live austerely, save more than you spend, and pay for quality that lasts rather than for pleasure. Your self-discipline is formidable, and you expect more of yourself than you would ask of anyone.
Aquarius Rising
You look forward: you back change, improvement, what does not exist yet, and it is easy to find you inside some cause. You are keenly aware that everything is connected, so you relate the personal to a larger frame and see the social consequences of private acts. You want to contribute something of value, even if only to your own group.
Equality, rights and social justice colour the way you see everything, and the good of the whole interests you rather than only your own. The price is that you sometimes overlook what you need — or what someone else needs — when it does not match how you believe one ought to feel; and though you have no patience for narrow-mindedness, you can become dogmatic yourself.
The new attracts you and your tastes are eclectic; you feel more like a citizen of the world than of any one place, and your generation shaped you more than your family did. You are friendly, with a somewhat impersonal goodwill: many acquaintances, few genuinely close friends, and closeness reaches you through shared ideas before shared feelings. You do not show emotion readily, and your independence is not up for negotiation.
Pisces Rising
You are gentle and sensitive, with a deep understanding of people and very little inclination to judge. In noisy or competitive surroundings you withdraw, because you genuinely dislike conflict: you tend to wait, watch, feel and know a great deal, and act little. Letting things work themselves out is usually how you deal with a problem.
You may hold a spiritual sense of life, not necessarily a religious one — more an intuition of an underlying oneness that makes most human striving look small. You need peace and stretches of solitude to be well. Compassion arrives before judgement and you cannot bear to watch anything suffer; as a child other people's pain upset you easily, and imagination was somewhere to go when the world got harsh.
Because you give and forgive readily, people in need find you, and you keep giving even once you can see how much they are leaning. You make excuses for other people's weaknesses and for your own; boundaries are not your strength. You are as intelligent as anyone, but logic does not govern you — feeling and intuition do, which exasperates whoever wanted an argument. That lets you hold many points of view at once, and also lose yourself among them.
