What Mercury retrograde is
Mercury retrograde is the stretch of time when Mercury, seen from Earth, appears to move backward through the zodiac. It happens about 3.15 times a year and lasts 22.2 days on average. Mercury never actually reverses: it is a perspective effect, the same one that makes a slower train look like it is rolling backward as yours pulls past it.
The geometry. Mercury circles the Sun every 88 days at about 47 km/s; Earth takes 365 days at about 30 km/s. Roughly every 116 days Mercury catches up with Earth on the inside lane and passes it. That moment is the inferior conjunction: Mercury sits between Earth and the Sun, lost in the glare. Around it, Mercury is on the stretch of its orbit nearest to us, and its motion across the background stars runs opposite to its usual direction. Those 116 days are Mercury’s synodic period, and 365 ÷ 116 gives exactly the 3.15 retrogrades per year.
The stations. Before reversing, Mercury slows until it seems to stand still for a day or two: the retrograde station. About three weeks later it slows and stops again: the direct station, after which it resumes normal forward motion. In between it backs up through about 13° of the zodiac on average, anywhere from 8.5° to 16° depending on the time of year, over roughly 20 to 24 days.
The loop. Mercury’s orbit is tilted 7° to Earth’s, so while it backs up it also drifts slightly above or below the ecliptic. Plot its position night by night against the stars and you get a loop or a Z: forward, pause, back along a slightly different line, pause, forward again.
What you can see. Before the retrograde station Mercury is east of the Sun, low in the west after sunset. After the conjunction it reappears on the other side, west of the Sun, as a morning object before dawn. That switch from evening to morning sky is the visible signature of every Mercury retrograde. Occasionally the line-up at inferior conjunction is exact and Mercury crosses the face of the Sun, a transit of Mercury, which can only happen in May or November.
All figures on this page were computed by us from NASA JPL’s DE440 ephemeris, for every retrograde between 1900 and 2100, in geocentric tropical longitude, the same coordinates a birth chart uses.
Mercury is direct right now. Its next retrograde starts on Oct 24, 2026 in Scorpio and ends on Nov 13, 2026. It has been in the pre-shadow since Oct 4, 2026.
Mercury retrograde dates for 2026 and 2027
The table lists every Mercury retrograde in 2026 and 2027 with exact times, computed from the ephemeris rather than copied from an almanac. How to read it:
Retrograde station: the moment Mercury stops and starts moving backward, with the sign and degree. This is the date most calendars give as “Mercury retrograde begins”.
Direct station: the moment it stops again and resumes forward motion. Its degree is always earlier than the retrograde station’s; the gap between the two is the stretch of zodiac Mercury covers backward. When the two fall in different signs, the retrograde starts in one sign and ends in the one before it.
Pre-shadow and post-shadow: the weeks before and after when Mercury, still moving forward, crosses the same stretch of sky it is about to retrace (or has just retraced). There is a worked example in the next section.
Times are in UTC. Subtract 5 hours for US Eastern Standard Time (4 in daylight time), 8 for Pacific (7 in daylight time); add 0 or 1 for the UK depending on the season. A station at 03:00 UTC still falls on the previous evening anywhere in the Americas.
For 2026 and 2027 the pattern is easy to remember. All three 2026 retrogrades are in water signs: Pisces (February 26 to March 20), Cancer (June 29 to July 23) and Scorpio (October 24 to November 13). In 2027 the same three points back into air: Pisces into Aquarius (February 9 to March 3), Cancer into Gemini (June 10 to July 4) and Scorpio into Libra (October 7 to 28). Why that happens is two sections down.

The Mercury retrograde shadow, with real numbers
The shadow is the stretch of zodiac Mercury crosses three times: forward before the retrograde (pre-shadow), backward during it, and forward again afterward (post-shadow). It begins when Mercury first reaches the degree of its upcoming direct station and ends when, moving forward again, it gets back to the degree where it stationed retrograde.
A real example, February 2026. Mercury stations retrograde on February 26, 2026 at 06:48 UTC at 22°34′ Pisces, and stations direct on March 20 at 19:32 UTC at 8°29′ Pisces. It backs up 14°05′.
That stretch, 8°29′ to 22°34′ Pisces, is the shadow. Mercury first enters it on February 11, while still direct, as it crosses 8°29′: the pre-shadow starts fifteen days before the station. After March 20 it covers the same stretch forward once more and leaves it only on April 9, when it passes 22°34′ again: the post-shadow ends twenty days after the direct station.
Put together, the full cycle runs February 11 to April 9: 57 days, of which only about 22 and a half are the retrograde proper. Across our 1900–2100 run the full cycle with shadows averages 55.6 days.
Now some honest arithmetic: 3.15 cycles a year times 55.6 days is about 175 days. If you treat the shadows as part of the “danger zone”, Mercury spends close to half the year in some phase of its retrograde. That is why astrologers who use the shadows describe them as phases rather than hazards: the pre-shadow is when the issue to be reviewed first shows up, the post-shadow is when the review gets put to use. They help you follow a process. They are not a reason to be anxious for six months a year.
Why Mercury retrograde moves through the elements
The three retrogrades of a given year almost always fall in signs of the same element, about 120° apart, and that trio slowly drifts backward through the zodiac, staying in one element for a year and a half to two before moving into the previous one. It is one of the neatest rhythms in planetary astronomy, and hardly anyone explains it.
The reason is arithmetic. Mercury’s synodic period, the time from one inferior conjunction to the next, is 115.88 days. In that time Earth covers about 114° of its orbit, and the Sun, as seen from here, moves the same amount through the zodiac. Since retrogrades always happen near the Sun, each one lands about 114° further on than the last: almost a trine, the spacing between signs of the same element.
Three synodic periods add up to 347.6 days, about 17 days short of a year. So each year the trio arrives about 17 days earlier and, in the zodiac, roughly 15–20° further back. Our 2026 and 2027 numbers show it: the February station moves from 22°34′ Pisces to about 6° Pisces, the June one from 26° Cancer to 6° Cancer, the October one from 21° Scorpio to 5° Scorpio. Backing up a full 30° sign therefore takes a little under two years.
The recent run is clean. In 2021 all three retrogrades were in air (Aquarius, Gemini, Libra). In 2022 and 2023, earth (Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo). In 2024 and 2025, fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), each one backing into the water or earth sign before it. In 2026, water (Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio). In 2027 the trio slips into air again: it starts in Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio and ends in Aquarius, Gemini and Libra. By 2028 it is all air.
Notice the order: air, earth, fire, water, air, the reverse of the zodiac’s own order, because the pattern moves backward. Every 22 synodic periods, almost exactly seven years, the pattern comes back close to where it was: the 2028 stations fall just a few degrees before the 2021 ones.
Astrologically, this gives each two-year stretch a recognizable review theme: air years revisit conversations, contracts and ideas; earth years, work, body and money; fire years, initiatives and desire; water years, relationships, memory and feelings. The reading is symbolic; the rhythm under it is exact astronomy.
Which signs get the most Mercury retrogrades
The signs do not get equal shares. Between 1900 and 2100, counting the sign of the retrograde station, Scorpio and Sagittarius get 58 each while Gemini and Cancer get only about 45. The table shows the full count, computed by us from NASA’s DE440 ephemeris.
The difference is real but modest: over two centuries Scorpio gets thirteen more retrogrades than Gemini, roughly one in five. No sign is spared and none hogs them; every sign gets several in any given decade.
Where the imbalance comes from. Mercury has the most eccentric orbit of any planet (eccentricity 0.206): its distance from the Sun swings between about 46 and 70 million km, and its speed between about 39 and 59 km/s. When the inferior conjunction happens with the Sun in Gemini or Cancer, Mercury is near aphelion, the slowest part of its orbit, and Earth is near its own aphelion too, in early July. In that part of the zodiac the retrograde loops end up spaced further apart, so fewer of them land in each sign.
The same eccentricity changes the shape of each retrograde. In our data, a retrograde that starts in Gemini covers only 8.6° on average and lasts almost 24 days; one that starts in Sagittarius or Capricorn covers over 16° and lasts about 20. Late-year retrogrades are shorter on the calendar but sweep twice as much zodiac; midyear ones are longer and more concentrated.
For a birth chart this means little: natal Mercury retrograde in Gemini is somewhat less common than in Sagittarius, but neither is rare.

What Mercury retrograde means in practice: what to do and what to avoid
In astrology Mercury rules communication, thinking, agreements, short trips, trade and paperwork. When it is retrograde, tradition reads all of that in the key of review: a good time to go back over what already exists, a poor time to launch things that need to work right the first time. That is the whole idea, and it is more useful than the fear it usually comes wrapped in.
What is myth. There is no evidence that phones break, luggage goes missing or misunderstandings multiply during these weeks more than at any other time. Mercury is around 90 million km away at that point and its apparent motion exerts no new force on anything. Mercury retrograde is a symbolic language for thinking about timing, not a cosmic malfunction. It also covers about one week in five: if it really wrecked everything, we would notice.
What does make sense, as symbolism and as plain good habit, is to use these weeks for the “re” words:
Review documents, contracts, budgets and plans before you finalize them. Resume projects you left half done. Reconnect with people you lost touch with: tradition says the past resurfaces, and often what resurfaces is simply an overdue conversation. Repair what has been half working: backups, accounts, files, the bike. Reconsider a decision before you announce it.
What tradition advises against, and why. Signing major contracts, launching a product, buying expensive tech, or starting anything that depends on having the full facts. The symbolic reasoning is that what begins under Mercury retrograde gets revisited later: terms change, the information was incomplete, it needs another pass. The practical reasoning is simpler: if you cannot postpone, do not. Sign, but read the fine print twice, confirm verbal agreements in writing and build slack into deadlines. That is good advice the other 80 % of the year too.
The stations matter more than the middle. In practice, astrologers treat the days around each station, when Mercury appears to stand still, as the most pronounced part of the cycle; the middle stretch, when it moves backward freely, is usually calmer. If you want to test the idea on your own life, keep notes on those specific days.
Where it falls in your chart. What astrology attributes to a transit depends on which house of your birth chart Mercury is moving through. A retrograde through your 7th house points to reviewing agreements and partnerships; through the 10th, career and reputation; through the 2nd, money and resources. To know which house holds which degree you need your full birth chart.
Mercury retrograde in the birth chart
Having Mercury retrograde in your birth chart means Mercury appeared to be moving backward at the moment you were born. That is true of 19.2 % of people, one in five: a class of thirty has five or six on average. It is not rare, not a flaw, and it does not mean you think less well. It describes a style: thinking that turns inward before it comes out.
The psychology. A direct Mercury processes in a straight line: take in, understand, respond. A retrograde Mercury processes in a loop: take in, store, look again, and respond later, sometimes much later. People who have it often recognize several of these: your best comebacks arrive hours afterward; you write better than you talk, because writing lets you go back; you need to review to learn, and what you learn that way sticks; you struggle with classes or meetings built for quick answers, yet notice what everyone else missed; you distrust first drafts, including your own.
Traditional astrology counted retrogradation as an accidental debility of the planet. The modern reading is subtler: the function is not weakened but internalized. A retrograde Mercury does not say less; it speaks after thinking twice, and for that reason often says something of its own. Many people with this placement develop an original way of thinking precisely because the standard way did not work for them.
Common misconceptions. It does not indicate a learning disability, though it can describe someone who learns by a different route from the one school rewards. It does not doom your contracts or your travel plans. And it does not “switch on” every time Mercury goes retrograde in the sky: some people say they feel more at home in those weeks, because the world finally slows to their pace, but your natal Mercury is the same all year.
An astronomical detail. Because retrogrades happen around inferior conjunction, a natal retrograde Mercury is always close to the Sun: in our calculation never more than about 22° away, and in two cases out of three in the same sign as the Sun. If you were born with Mercury retrograde, your Sun and Mercury very likely share a sign, and are almost certainly in neighboring ones at most.
Progression. In secondary progressions, each day after birth stands for a year of life. If you were born with Mercury retrograde, count the days until its direct station: at roughly that age your progressed Mercury turns direct, and many people describe that time as when they found their voice or their way of learning. Since the retrograde lasts about 22 days, this always happens before age 25.
How to tell if you have it. Enter your date of birth in the calculator above: it shows which planets were retrograde that day. If you were born on a station day the time matters, so check your full birth chart, which marks every retrograde planet with an R and also shows which house Mercury occupies. For the other planets see retrograde planets; for Mercury’s role in general, Mercury in astrology.
Natal Mercury retrograde in each sign
The sign sets the tone of the thinking; the retrograde sends it inward first. Here is how the two combine in each of the twelve signs. Read it alongside the house your Mercury falls in and its aspects, which shade it a lot.
Mercury retrograde in Aries
Mercury in Aries thinks fast and talks straight. Retrograde, the speed is still there, but the first round is fought inside your head: you argue with yourself, anticipate the objection, rehearse the comeback. Sometimes it fires off too early and you circle back to correct it, with no trouble admitting the first version was a draft.
You decide quickly and revise quickly. You learn by trying, failing and trying again, and your own process frustrates you more than anyone else’s. One concrete trap: still fighting, internally, arguments that ended days ago. Your strength is the nerve to change your mind in public once you see you were wrong, which very few people allow themselves. Your Sun is in Aries or a neighbor, Pisces or Taurus, and that colors things a lot: with a Pisces Sun the impulse turns more intuitive, with a Taurus Sun more stubborn.
Mercury retrograde in Taurus
Mercury in Taurus already thinks slowly and thoroughly; retrograde, the mental digestion gets slower still, and sturdier. You need to hear something several times, handle it, watch it work, before you count it as understood. What you understand that way you never lose.
You say little, and it carries weight. Your opinions take a long time to form and are very hard to shift afterward, so it pays to learn when that is conviction and when it is simple reluctance to revise. Over the years you tend to return to a handful of core ideas and polish them, like working the same piece of wood.
You learn better with your hands and through repetition than from theory. Your money and purchasing decisions are slow and you rarely regret them. Your memory is strongly sensory: you remember how a voice sounded, what was on the table during a conversation, the feel of the room where you learned something.
Mercury retrograde in Gemini
Gemini is Mercury’s own sign, so the planet has all its tools here: curiosity, connections, words. Retrograde, all that activity runs in loops. You gather information from everywhere and keep re-sorting it until it clicks into a shape nobody else had seen.
Your richest conversation is the one with yourself, and you may talk a great deal about side topics while keeping quiet about the one that matters. You collect notebooks, drafts, open tabs and half-finished projects, and some of them get finished years later, when you suddenly see how they fit together.
At school you may have felt out of step: tests reward quick recall and you need to reorganize before you answer. You have a gift for synthesis, translation, editing and rewriting: taking something said one way and saying it better. The risk is scatter, so many loops that the idea never makes it out. Gemini gets the fewest retrogrades of any sign, so your placement is a little less common.
Mercury retrograde in Cancer
Mercury in Cancer thinks through memory and feeling; retrograde, the past becomes the main material of your mind. You remember conversations almost word for word, and above all you remember the tone: how something was said matters more to you than what was said.
In the moment it is hard to put feelings into words; the words arrive days later, which is why so many of your important messages are written late at night. You learn when the setting feels safe and shut down with teachers who are cold or mocking.
Your decisions run through one clear filter: how will this affect my people. The risk is rumination, going back again and again to old hurts and to things someone said twenty years ago. The gift is being the memory of your family or group: the one who knows how things really went, who keeps the stories and tells them well, with all their shading.
Mercury retrograde in Leo
Mercury in Leo speaks with presence and conviction. Retrograde, there is an inner stage where you rehearse before stepping onto the real one: what you will say, how, with which example. On the outside you come across as sure of yourself; on the inside you have revised your lines more times than anyone would guess.
Your creative ideas ripen slowly and you dislike showing drafts: you want whatever you show to already carry your signature. Admitting in public that you changed your mind is hard for you, even though you do it easily in private; working on that gap frees you up a great deal.
You learn by making things, not memorizing: you understand something once you have turned it into a story or a piece of your own. You have a talent for storytelling and, above all, for reworking your own material until it shines. The risk is performing a certainty you do not feel. The gift is that your ideas, when they finally come out, are unmistakably yours.
Mercury retrograde in Virgo
Virgo is both Mercury’s home and its exaltation: analysis here is sharp and the eye for detail very fine. Retrograde, all that analysis also turns on your own thinking. You check, check again, find the error nobody else saw, and sometimes it is yours.
Editing is your natural mode. Anything you write goes through many versions, and the last one is very good; the first one you almost never show. You decide slowly because you see every possible flaw in every option, and without a deadline you can stay in that analysis indefinitely.
You learn by taking things apart: you need to understand how something works piece by piece, and then you know it better than whoever taught you. The risk is detail anxiety, the 3 a.m. worry loops. The gift is the reviewer’s, the editor’s, the diagnostician’s: on a team, you are the person who catches the disaster no one else saw coming.
Mercury retrograde in Libra
Mercury in Libra weighs both sides of everything. Retrograde, the scales keep swinging inside you long after the conversation is over: you argue for and against, and you understand the other person’s position so well that you sometimes lose sight of your own.
You speak with tact and listen for real, and you often discover what you actually wanted to say afterward, on the way home or the next morning. So give yourself permission to reopen an agreement and say “I’ve thought it over”, without treating it as a failure.
You learn through dialogue, comparing views, debating. Your decisions tend to get reopened, especially ones that affect someone else. The risk is the “yes” you say to avoid conflict and later resent. The gift is reflective fairness: you are the person others turn to for a calm second reading of a conflict, once tempers have cooled.
Mercury retrograde in Scorpio
Mercury in Scorpio investigates, reads between the lines, looks for what goes unsaid. Retrograde, that investigation is almost always private: you rarely show what you are thinking, and when you do, you have already gone very deep. You return to a subject that intrigues you again and again, sometimes for years.
You listen more than you talk and you register the nuances: the pause before an answer, the word someone avoided. Your memory for slights is long, and it helps to know that about yourself. Your decisions are made in silence and, once made, are very firm.
You learn in depth rather than breadth: one subject all the way down rather than ten skimmed. The risk is suspicion that feeds on itself and replaying what was done to you. The gift is an investigator’s mind, a psychologist’s, someone who gets to the root. Scorpio and Sagittarius receive more Mercury retrogrades than any other sign.
Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius
Mercury in Sagittarius thinks big: the overall meaning, the philosophy, the why. Retrograde, your beliefs are under permanent review. You question what you were taught, take your own certainties apart and rebuild them differently, and every few years your worldview is different, and more your own.
You speak with enthusiasm and qualify later; sometimes you state something with total conviction and correct it days afterward, not from inconsistency but because you kept thinking. You care more about what a fact means than about the exact figure, which carries a risk: getting lost in the big idea and missing the detail that contradicts it.
You learn on your own, by traveling, reading off the syllabus, talking with people from elsewhere. Rigid classrooms felt too small. Your gift is teaching what you had to unlearn: someone who has reexamined their own faith, politics or philosophy can help others do the same without preaching.
Mercury retrograde in Capricorn
Mercury in Capricorn thinks in structures and long timelines. Retrograde, you plan quietly well before you act: by the time you present an idea it already has phases, a budget and a plan B. Your thinking was probably serious from an early age, and people may have taken you for older than you were.
You review your mistakes as strategic material, not to punish yourself, though that line can blur and the self-criticism can get heavy. You speak briefly and precisely; small talk wears on you.
Many people with this Mercury learned late, or on their own, or through sheer effort, and what they learned that way hardens into real authority over the years. Your decisions are slow and responsible. The risk is pessimism, seeing first what could go wrong. The gift is a mind that improves with age: your ideas at fifty are better than at twenty, and you know it.
Mercury retrograde in Aquarius
Mercury in Aquarius already thinks against the grain; retrograde, it takes routes even the contrarians do not know. You reach conclusions by odd paths, sometimes get there before anyone else and cannot say how. Your thinking can feel out of sync with the group, ahead or behind, rarely in step.
You are drawn to systems: how an organization, a technology or a society works, and which shared assumption nobody has stopped to question. Revisiting what everyone takes for granted is your natural territory.
You learn independently, following your curiosity, and resist being taught in the prescribed order. The risk is distance: explaining yourself so entirely from inside your own logic that others cannot follow, or retreating from feeling into pure idea. The gift is deep innovation, not the clever notion but rethinking the problem from scratch.
Mercury retrograde in Pisces
Mercury in Pisces thinks in images, impressions and moods. Retrograde, that thinking turns even further inward: you perceive far more than you can put into words, and the words come slowly, often through dreams, music or free writing.
You absorb the atmosphere of a conversation before its content, and you may remember how you felt much better than what was said. Hard decisions are difficult to face head-on, so give yourself a method, however simple, to keep them from drifting.
Linear schooling may not have suited the way you learn, which works through association and immersion. The risk is confusion, forgetting the practical, escaping. The gift is unusual imagination and an unusual way of listening: poetry, music, being there for others. Everyone born between February 26 and March 20, 2026 has this Mercury.
Frequently asked questions
When is Mercury retrograde in 2026?
Mercury goes retrograde three times a year, occasionally four. The exact dates and times for 2026 and 2027, with shadow periods, are in the table on this page, computed from NASA’s DE440 ephemeris.
How long does Mercury retrograde last?
Between 20 and 24 days, 22 on average. Counting the pre-shadow and post-shadow, the full cycle runs about eight weeks.
What should you not do during Mercury retrograde?
Tradition advises against signing major contracts, launching projects or buying expensive tech without careful review. There is no evidence things actually break more often: if you cannot wait, go ahead, but read twice, confirm in writing and leave slack.
What does Mercury retrograde in a birth chart mean?
It means Mercury appeared to move backward when you were born, which is true of one person in five. It describes thinking that processes inward first: answers that come later, a preference for writing and reviewing, a learning style of your own.
Is Mercury retrograde bad?
No. As a transit it is a symbolic time for review, not bad luck, and as a natal placement it is a thinking style shared by 19 % of people. Mercury does not really move backward: it is a perspective effect.
What is the Mercury retrograde shadow?
It is the stretch of zodiac Mercury crosses three times: before the retrograde (pre-shadow, about two weeks), during it, and after it (post-shadow, about two to three weeks).
Why does Mercury look like it is moving backward?
Because Mercury, faster and closer to the Sun, overtakes Earth on the inside about three times a year. While it passes us, it appears to slide backward against the background stars.
How do I know if I was born with Mercury retrograde?
Enter your date of birth in the calculator on this page, or get your full birth chart: retrograde planets are marked with an R.
